Reduce the hassle of cloud-related budgeting and resource management with Xervmon.

It’s no secret that the future of IT lies “in the cloud”.  From software to actual processing power, the number of services remotely available, and accessible through nearly any device with an Internet connection is rapidly growing.  While this provides a number of new and exciting, cost-effective, and scalable IT solutions to businesses of all types and sizes, it also creates one major problem…

Tracking your company’s cloud-based spending, and managing your network of cloud resources can be a nightmare.  The fact that many of the costs and usage metrics associated with cloud services are often variable, relatively small on their own, and can be numerous as different services are added, can make for a time-consuming (i.e. costly) accounting, budgeting, and strategic planning process.  This problem only worsens once you address the logistics of factoring your physical, legacy IT infrastructure into the equation.

However, new problems always call for new solutions.  That’s where Xervmon comes in.

What exactly does Xervmon Do?

Xervmon provides IT managers, CFO’s, and other key company decision makers a simple solution to budget and accurately track spending across their entire IT infrastructures – including both legacy resources and those in the cloud.  In addition, we provide in-depth predictive data analytics regarding future IT use, through our applets Cloudspend and SpendTrend based on proprietary algorithms. This information is presented to users in a number of ways, such as our browser-based web application and mobile apps (currently supporting iPhone & iPad and Android devices). Not only users are provided with sortable raw data but also with easy to visualize graphical representations that can be easily exported to a number of widely used software solutions. Additionally all these valuable data points and visualization besides alert notifications can be configured for periodic email delivery.

How does Xervmon work?

Xervmon directly aggregates and analyzes all of your key IT usage metrics and expenses automatically.  This automatic integration with your cloud services is managed by a number of guaranteed secure and fully encrypted methods (typically through API’s) to access and analyze your provider specific information in real time.   Our service does require you to enter your physical, legacy IT system data manually, however we’ve refined this process to be as simple and streamlined as possible for all of our users.  Once the data entry and integration process is completed, our analytic engine does all the intensive work for you and break it down into easily understandable charts, graphs - and even direct, actionable insights.

What Xervmon means for your business…

  • Xervmon provides insightful actions that are a product of your Business/IT strategy and our proprietary algorithms embedded into constantly learning analytic engine.
  • Xervmon allows you to make more informed decisions ultimately achieving the primary goal of a business tool - saving your company money without compromising on the IT objectives.

State of the Union: The Marriage Between Budget and Spend

Budget: an estimate, often itemized, of expected income andexpense for a given period in the future.

For many businesses, budgeting time is busy time when managers meet, brainstorming occurs, complicated calculations are done, negotiations are conducted and finally, a set of guiding figures are released. Now, budgeting has a lot of advantages. For one, it helps to take stock of the current situation. Secondly, it helps set expectations for the future. Unfortunately, where IT spending is concerned, many businesses realize that matching actual spends to budgets is a Herculean task.

There are several reasons for variances between budgeted IT expenditures and actual IT spends. One is the innate unpredictability of IT usage. Not only is it dependent on demand but also on constantly changing technological innovations like the cloud. Secondly, unlike expenditure on labor and materials, IT spending is difficult to track on a continuous basis, especially if multiple vendors are involved.

Therefore, is budgeting for IT a lost cause? Should businesses stop spending dollars and hours in this exercise? The answer is “No.” It’s well established that “failing to plan is planning to fail,” or in other words, absence of a planning exercise like budgeting can quickly lead to cost overruns from which the business may fail to recover. However, the aforementioned problems in IT budgeting remain.

Thankfully, there’s Xervmon. We realized the business need for the ability to track IT spending, especially in the dynamic world of cloud computing. Itself of cloud origin, Xervmon has the unique ability to integrate and analyze spending data across multiple cloud vendors and legacy IT. From this ability springs the following features:

  • It provides businesses spend trends across multiple service providers
  • It presents cost saving opportunities, predictive analyses and cost/usage information
  • It uses proprietary applets CloudSpend™ and  SpendTrend™ to run analysis on IT spend data
  • It consolidates and integrates IT spend data in easily exportable formats using Big Data techniques
  • It integrates seamlessly with existing dashboard software like SharePoint and Alfresco

All this makes reconciliation of actual spend with budget considerably easier. Therefore, with Xervmon running, the marriage between budget and spend is no longer on the rocks; the state of the union is stronger than ever before.

The Inevitability of the Cloud

With all the news about cloud computing afoot, I was wondering how, whenever we hear the word “cloud” nowadays, we immediately think about “cloud computing” and not fluffy wisps of concentrated water vapor. Even Google, perhaps the greatest source of knowledge today, populates a query starting with the word “cloud” as “cloud computing” using the Google Instant functionality. Perhaps future generations will relate to clouds in a manner that has nothing to do with the harbinger of precipitation but everything to do with technology.

But why is cloud computing so popular? To understand this, consider how we consume electricity, that wonderful thing without which modern civilization will grind to a halt. We do not generate electricity, nor do we transmit or store it; we just flick the switch and voila!

Wouldn’t it be amazing if computing power were available just like electricity, as and when we need it? Wouldn’t it be advantageous if we didn’t have to buy computer hardware, not unlike the way we survive without our own personal dynamos and transformers? Wouldn’t it be easy on our pockets if we had to pay for only as much computing resources as we use, much like how we are billed for the consumption of electricity? If you answer in the affirmative to these questions, you understand why cloud computing is so popular. In fact, its dominance is inevitable in the world of computing, and consequently, business. However, cloud computing is not a simple game with well-defined rules. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

For one, there is a distinct lack of standardization. Consequently, multiple standards exist, many of which can be beneficial to you in different ways. For example, you may find running custom apps or more precisely CRM (Ex: SugarCRM or X2Engine etc.,) software on a Microsoft platform hosted on Amazon servers to be most beneficial. Secondly, there are several players with different strengths offering competing services. For example, while you may choose Amazon for long-term storage, Rackspace may offer you faster load times at higher costs that you use for hosting applications.

With so many options at hand, it becomes difficult to keep track of all your cloud spends. And this is where Xervmon comes in. With its ability to source and integrate spending information from multiple vendors (Amazon, Google, Rackspace, HP, Microsoft) across all the tiers of the cloud stack (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and legacy IT, Xervmon is a tracking and analysis tool like no other. Thus, even as cloud adoption is inevitable in business, Xervmon can play a crucial role in ensuring that you manage the budget to do it right.
